Leyton Orient’s season ended in heartbreak last semester when the O’s were relegated from League Two to the National League, following long and prosperous spell in the Football League.

Dropping out of the competition can have disastrous effects on clubs, with the loss of financial earnings the most hard hitting consequence facing teams that find themselves plunged into the top tier of non league football.

The journey back to the Football League is not easy, with just the title winners accompanied by the play-off champions enjoying promotion each season, and many teams that fall into the division find it very hard to re-emerge.

Orient will hope for an instant return to the League, and have overcome serious difficulties in recent months to begin anew.

Leyton Orient’s turbulent spell under the tenure of Italian Francesco Becchetti is finally over, and new chairman Nigel Travis intends to invest in the club to ensure they compete at the top of the table next season.

Manager Steve Davis has added five new faces to what was an extremely depleted squad, with the most notable addition being the resigning of David Mooney, who was prolific for Orient several years ago when they lost out in the League One play-off final to Rotherham.

Mooney will score bags of goals in the 5th tier, and bringing the player back to Brisbane Road is a real coup for Davis.

More new faces are needed at the club before the season kicks off next month if Orient are to challenge for an automatic return, but the situation in east London is much healthier than it was when the final whistle blew at the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

The National League is set to be extremely competitive next season, and Orient fans will surely just be glad to finish in the top ten next year following the difficulties they have endured under the previous ownership.

It will be tough for Orient to bounce back at the first time of asking, but with Travis now in charge and Davis leading the side, things are finally looking up for this beleaguered old club.
