Sunderland finished bottom of the Championship this season after a terrible campaign.

After suffering relegation from the Premier League last year, Sunderland were once again demoted after their year in the second tier yielded just seven wins.

There were 23 losses in there and they shipped a staggering 80 goals in a forgettable season at The Stadium of Light.

Here, we review Sunderland's season and select some of their best performers.

FLW Player of the Year

While the vast majority of Sunderland's players have been abysmal this season, there have been a few younger ones who have emerged this year.

George Honeyman has taken advantage of Sunderland's relegation to establish himself as a first-team star and after scoring seven goals from midfield, he is attracting interest from the Championship.

FLW Young Player of the Year

Other youngsters making the most of their opportunities in the first-team were Lynden Gooch, Paddy McNair, Joel Asoro and Josh Maja.

We have given the young player accolade to Swedish striker Asoro, 19, who hit three goals for the Black Cats.

FLW Goal of the Season

McNair capped a superb passing move to give Sunderland the lead in a 1-1 draw with Leeds United earlier this season.

Donald Love scooped the ball over the Leeds defence for McNair to send a powerful angled drive into the top corner.

FLW Signing of the Year

Sunderland's signings were poor, in truth, other than Lewis Grabban.

The 30-year-old joined on loan from Bournemouth in the summer and hit 12 goals in 18 starts before deciding to cut his stint short and join Aston Villa instead.

FLW Performance of the Year

There were very few performances that stood out this season but a 4-1 win away at Derby was a rare bright moment for Sunderland.

The Rams were poor that day and goals from Honeyman, Ashley Fletcher, Aiden McGeady and John O'Shea sealed a convincing win at Pride Park.

FLW Best Quote

This from Chris Coleman perfectly sums up the strained relationship between the owner and the manager: "I have never witnessed anything like this before where I have never spoken to a chairman."
