Sunderland booked their place at Wembley at the end of the month with a 0-0 draw at Fratton Park in the second leg of the League One play-off semi-final.

The result meant they win 1-0 on aggregate after Chris Maguire's goal in the first leg. In a dull match tempered with bad feeling, the Black Cats were able to hold on against an organised but unadventurous Portsmouth side.

The game was never a pretty affair and one unsavoury moment is sure to have severe repercussions for the home side.

Luke O'Nien tussled for the ball and ended up tumbling into the stands. As he tried to get to his feet, he was seemingly kicked three or four times by a supporter.

The incident was caught on camera and has led to instant condemnation.

It might not quite have been in the same league as the attack on Jack Grealish, but there are certainly parallels as a player is again assaulted simply doing his job.

Supporters of many different clubs on Twitter were all quick to offer their insight into the situation, with many calling for police action as well as punishment for Portsmouth.
