Sunderland suffered what could prove to be a season-defining defeat as they lost an action-packed game against Coventry City 5-4 at the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats looked far from their best and fell behind with Bright Enobakhare opening the scoring, but George Honeyman responded for the hosts soon after.

But the Sky Blues took their chances, with Amadou Bakayoko and Jordi Hiwula giving them a two-goal cushion as half-time approached.

Charlie Wyke and Will Grigg netted in quick succession though to see both sides level heading into the break in a thrilling first-half.

Jordan Shipley edged Coventry back in front, before Max Power equalised soon after, but Conor Chaplin netted the winner with 12 minutes remaining.

This result means that Jack Ross' side dropped out of the automatic promotion places, after Barnsley beat Fleetwood today.

It's safe to say that Sunderland supporters weren't best pleased with this latest result.
