When Stoke City under-23s were drawn against Port Vale for their Checkatrade Trophy clash many concerns would have been outlined before the two local rivals faced off.

Port Vale ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over the young Stoke outfit, which saw the League Two side progress to the next round of the competition.

However, no one could have predicted the magnitude of the shocking scenes that overshadowed a one-sided game on Tuesday evening.

Missiles were thrown at the Port Vale players, whilst the away end facilities were completely destroyed by the Stoke supporters in scenes that shocked footballing fans across England.

The reaction on social media was largely filled with people offering support to the League Two side and many criticised the actions of the visiting supporters.

Arrests have since been made following the clashes on Tuesday.
