North East rivals Sunderland and Middlesbrough are set to miss out on Scotland international attacker Jai Quitongo, who is set to sign for League One table-toppers Wigan Athletic, according to TEAMTalk.

Quitongo is out of contract at Morton in the summer, which had led both Tony Pulis and Chris Coleman to keep tabs on the 20-year-old, who can play as the main striker or out wide, with the view to a cut-price deal.

However, Paul Cook's high-flying Latics look set to seal a deal for the Scotsman, who is also eligible to play for Angola, despite being in the league below.

The forward was offered a new deal with the Scottish outfit but refused it, with clear designs on engineering a move down to England in either this transfer window or the next.

The Verdict

It would have been hard to see Quitongo making an impact under Tony Pulis at Boro, but the talented wideman could have added a spark to Chris Coleman's struggling Sunderland side.

However, neither will be overly disappointed to miss out on such a raw player when more polished players are probably required for either to achieve their goals by the end of the season.
