Speaking on his Instagram account, former Tottenham and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has recalled the time he had to go at centre-half for the Red Devils against old rivals Leeds United.

It was in a League Cup game at Elland Road - one that the visitors won 3-0 - and by the time they were that far in front, Berbatov ended up having to drop into defence.

Indeed, with a fair chunk of the game to go, Sir Alex Ferguson had used all of his subs and Zeki Fryers then had to come off.

A defensive reshuffle ensued and saw Berbatov pairing with Michael Carrick in the heart of defence, naturally.

The Bulgarian reflected on that on social media, then, by saying:

"First of all it was not five minutes, it was like half an hour maybe.

"Of course I remember it, but not many people remember which game it was. I was like [Franco] Baresi, [Paolo] Maldini and [Franz] Beckenbauer in one.”

The Verdict

Man Utd were already three goals to the good against Leeds in this game so it was perhaps less of an issue than it could have been, seeing a striker move to centre-half.

Even so, he, perhaps jokingly, felt as though he did a good job in the heart of defence alongside Carrick - who was sometimes utilised there by Ferguson during his time at Old Trafford.

For Leeds, a pretty forgettable result but it's clear it's stuck in Berbatov's mind.
