‘Different level’ – Many Stoke City fans pick out display from one player following Brentford loss

A number of Stoke City supporters have piled praise on midfielder Romaine Sawyers following his performance in the Potters’ 2-1 defeat against Brentford in the Last 16 of the League Cup.

The Potters went into the game aiming to cause a mini upset and make it into the last eight of the Carabao Cup.

That though was always going to be a tough task against a Brentford side who have been performing well since they earned promotion to the Premier League last term.

Michael O’Neill’s side were undone by Brentford in a difficult opening 45 minutes where they did not perform as strongly as they needed to keep themselves on level terms with the Bees.

However, after going in at half time 2-0 down, Stoke were much-improved after the re-start and Sawyers’ performance in the middle of the park was a crucial reason why they were able to drag themselves back into the contest.

The West Brom loanee produced an excellent finish to bring Stoke back to within one goal of Brentford in the 57th minute of the game.

While he was also strong in possession all night with him making three key passes and also completing one successful dribble.

It was a performance that saw Sawyers stand out against his former club and Premier League opposition. That suggests that he could start to emerge as an even more crucial player in the league for the Potters in the coming weeks.
