A host of Leeds United stars have moved to congratulate their teammate Kalvin Phillips after he signed a new long-term deal with the club.
The midfielder put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Elland Road on Monday night, putting an end to speculation of his departure that engulfed the club in the summer, and plenty of his teammates are clearly delighted with the news.
They each reacted to his personal Instagram post, with Eddie Nketiah, Barry Douglas, Tyler Roberts and Jack Clarke among those to send their wishes.
During the summer, Phillips was linked with moves to Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers after they failed to win promotion following a heartbreaking end to the season.
It was a season that saw the 23-year-old become a central figure to Marcelo Bielsa’s revolution, playing in 42 of their 46 league games and both of the play-off ties with Derby County.
Whilst the deal is undoubtedly good news for the club, a report from Football Insider did reveal that there is a release clause in the player’s contract, leaving the option for Phillips to leave next summer.
If this doesn’t emphasise the influence that Phillips has in the Leeds United dressing room, I am not sure what does.
The midfielder was excellent last season on the pitch, but it is clear both from the club’s own socials and the recent Leeds United documentary just how likeable he is off it.
It begs the question of just how big an impact his departure could have had on the side this season had he decided to leave in the summer.
