Bristol City boss Lee Johnson has moved to replace prolific loan man Tammy Abraham in recent days with the acquisition of Senegalese international striker Famara Diedhiou, who signed from Ligue 1 Angers in a club record deal.

The striker only linked up with the French club last summer having played the previous season in Ligue 2 with Clermont, scoring an impressive 22 goals in 37 matches.

Nine goals in Ligue 1 this year convinced Johnson to part with over £5 million for the player, who comes from the same club the Robins captured former forward Jonathan Kodjia from before he moved on to Aston Villa in another record deal.

City fans are sure to be sceptical, as even the most devoted fan will surely admit that they have never heard of the Senegalese before he touched down in Bristol.

£5 million is a lot of money in the bottom half of the Championship, and fans will have to place faith in their side’s scouting team and hope that Diedhiou can transfer his form in the French leagues to the English second tier.

Kodjia came to Ashton Gate an unknown quantity and flourished, and the same could be said for Tammy Abraham, with the 19 year old loanee smashing a remarkable 23 league goals in his year in the west.

It remains to be seen if Diedhiou will reach the levels of his predecessors, but the player is undoubtedly an exciting proposition for fans, with eagerness to get the new campaign started spreading across the city.

Diedhiou could explode onto the scene if he starts well, and Bristol City could make another tidy profit.

Lee Johnson seems to know what it takes to get the best out of his strikers, and with the young boss at the helm, the odds are that Diedhiou will flourish.
