Sunderland were edged out of the Carabao Cup last night, losing 2-0 in a relatively tight match against Sheffield Wednesday.

Whilst a cup exit may not have been the best outcome, Jack Ross' side didn't embarrass themselves against higher-level opposition and went into the game nursing a huge injury list.

Adam Matthews and Charlie Wyke were just two on a list of seven or eight who missed the game, which adds some context to the defeat.

The lack of first team players meant a debut for 22-year old Denver Hume, a left back who has graduated from the U23 squad.

He's an athletic and energetic player who presses high up the pitch and can offer versatility across the defence.

He came off the bench for the final game of last season against Wolves, but he made his first start for the club last night, playing all 90 minutes of the cup tie.

Sunderland fans were delighted to see one of their own emerging from the shadows to take centre stage and took to twitter to express their delight at his performance.
