Leeds United's success this season has been built on the strength of their defensive unit.

They haven't quite hit form in front of goal this season, as none of the top 11 sides in the Championship have scored fewer goals than the Whites.

But defensively they've outshone anyone else in the English second tier. Leeds have conceded just eight goals, fewer than any other side in the league, and have kept the most clean sheets in the division (eight).

If they can remain that resolute throughout the season and improve their  in the final third, you'd imagine that Marcelo Bielsa's side will be very well set to end their 15-year absence from the Premier League this season.

With that in mind, Leeds supporters will likely be seriously concerned about the ongoing developments at Brighton.

The severity of the ankle injury picked up by Seagulls defender Adam Webster in their 2-0 win over Norwich City on Saturday is not yet known and it is understood that the Premier League club are awaiting the results of a scan.

The 24-year-old, who was forced off after 36 minutes after picking up the injury against the Canaries, had become a regular fixture under Graham Potter since arriving in the summer–starting eight times.

Brighton broke their transfer record to sign Webster from Bristol City in August, moving for the 24-year-old after a season that saw him win both of the Robins' Player of the Year awards and finish in the Whoscored Team of the Season–partnering Leeds captain Liam Cooper at centre-back.

Should Webster's injury turn out to be serious and keep the defender out long term, it might have a significant impact on Cooper's current defensive partner Ben White.

It has already been suggested that the Premier League club could look to recall the 22-year-old after his extremely impressive start to the season, if Webster is out long term, you feel Potter may look to bring White back in January to replace him.

That would be a nightmare situation for the Whites. The Brighton loanee has been arguably their player of the season so far, featuring in every single game, keeping more clean sheets than any other centre-back in the division, and winning the PFA Fans' Player of the Month award for August.

It seemed questionable when it was indicated that Leeds planned to replace departing centre-back Pontus Jansson with the relatively untested 22-year-old but so far it has seemed like a masterstroke.

Bielsa's style of play relies on defenders who are good with the ball at their feet and can play out of the back. White has been outstanding in that area this season–he averages the most passes per game in the Leeds squad and has the third-highest pass accuracy of any Whites player, according to Whoscored.

White has become an integral player for Leeds and losing him in January could de-rail their promotion push. Having to replace him in the middle of the season and get that replacement up to speed with Bielsa's style and high standards will be no easy feat.

Leeds fans will no doubt be monitoring Webster's fitness closely ahead of an announcement on the severity of his injury and if it is long-term, they'd be right to have serious concerns.
