Swansea City's attempt to loan Chelsea midfielder Kasey Palmer has hit a stumbling block with the player thought to only be keen on a permanent deal, according to Wales Online.

New Swans boss Steve Cooper has publicly admitted his interest in loaning Palmer, but the midfielder is understood to be looking for long-term stability at his next club after a string of temporary moves.

The 22-year-old has spent time at Huddersfield Town, Derby County, Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City over the last three seasons and is now looking to settle down at a club where he can establish himself.

It is thought a fee in the region of £3.5million would be enough to secure the England Under-21 international's services, but Swansea are reluctant to spend big money on players this summer.

This could put Bristol City in the driving seat to re-sign Palmer after he spent the second half of last season on loan at Ashton Gate, as they are reportedly ready to make a move if Swansea's negotiations collapse.

The verdict

This could spell bad news for Swansea in their pursuit of Palmer, as I can't see them being willing to pay the reported fee at this stage.

The club are operating on a meagre budget this summer and have made it clear that loans and free transfers would be their main transfer targets this summer, which means the permanent signing of Palmer may not be financially possible.

I think Palmer is an excellent young player who could really excel under the tutelage of Cooper, but the midfielder will also be attracted by the possibility of a return to Bristol City after his spell there last season.

The Swans are running out of time to add new players to their ranks, so it's important they make a decision on Palmer soon to allow themselves the chance to pursue other potential targets.
