West Bromwich Albion don’t have the option to sign Dwight Gayle permanently at the end of his current loan spell, with the striker open to returning to Newcastle United in the future.

Newcastle reached an agreement with West Brom over the summer that saw Gayle head to the Hawthorns on loan, with Salomon Rondon heading in the opposite direction.

The Chronicle Live have revealed that Newcastle refused to insert a buyout clause in the deal for Gayle, with the 29-year-old open to resuming his career at St James’ Park should the opportunity present itself in the future.

Gayle helped guide Newcastle to promotion in 2017, but after a frustrating year back in the Premier League, the striker finds himself in the Championship for the second time in three years.

So far he’s made an excellent start to life in the Midlands, helping Darren Moore’s West Brom into promotion contention after 17 fixtures of the season.

The 29-year-old has nine goals to his name, with the latest of those coming in the 4-1 demolition of Leeds United on Saturday evening.

The goal came from Gayle’s first touch, with the striker improvising cleverly to back-heel the ball into an unguarded Leeds goal.

The Verdict

Gayle seemed happy in Newcastle despite things not going well for the striker on the pitch over the course of the last 12 months.

Obviously, his focus will be on promotion with West Brom, but it doesn’t appear that his stay at the Hawthorns will last longer than 12 months.

In a way, that will disappoint Albion’s supporters.
