Sheffield United tried to do a deal for Helder Costa before last night's deadline, but the Leeds United man opted for Valencia instead.

It's no secret that Slavisa Jokanovic was desperate to strengthen his squad after enduring a tough start to life at Bramall Lane, and attacking reinforcements were a priority following their lack of goals so far this season.

Whilst Morgan Gibbs-White and Conor Hourihane will bring creativity to the team, the boss clearly wanted more, as The Athletic revealed that the Blades were in for Costa, only for him to turn them down.

"Valencia are still pushing to sign Helder Costa from Leeds. Clubs in Spain and Turkey are also interested in the Portuguese winger. Sheffield United enquired but Costa decided against a move."

Bringing in the 27-year-old would've been seen as a coup for the Blades, as Costa has played his part in two promotions from the Championship in the past, at Wolves and most recently with the Whites.

However, he didn't always hit the heights expected at Elland Road following what was a big-money move from Wanderers in 2019.

The verdict

This is a shame for Sheffield United as Costa would've given Jokanovic the option to play with an out-and-out winger if he wanted, as well as bringing pace and a direct threat to the team.

But, you can understand why he turned down the Blades as the chance to play in La Liga with Valencia is one that will have appealed a lot.

Ultimately, this was a setback for Sheffield United and fans will feel they are probably one or two quality players short after the window, even if they had a positive final few days on the whole.
