Despite reports of the contrary, Sheffield Wednesday did not receive £4 million in compensation for Steve Bruce's move to Newcastle United, according to Dom Howson from Yorkshire Live.

Bruce left the Owls to take charge at the Premier League club in July last year – less than three weeks before the start of the Championship season.

The 59-year-old had arrived at Hillsborough last February with Wednesday in 17th and led to an 11th-place finish.

However, after a brief saga, he made the move to St. James' Park meaning Wednesday were forced to begin the campaign with caretaker boss Lee Bullen in charge.

Garry Monk took over in September and it looked as though the Owls could challenge for the play-offs before a slump in form saw them slide down the table.

It was reported at the time that Newcastle had paid Wednesday £4 million in compensation for Bruce, however, details have emerged today that suggested that was not the case.

In a Q&A for Yorkshire Live, Howson revealed that the figure that the Owls received less than £4 million in compensation for Bruce and his coaching staff.

He claimed that the figure was lower than that but still a significant amount and added: "Things may become clearer on how Wednesday intend to use that money when the financial accounts for the 2018/19 season are revealed this summer."

The Verdict

Bruce's exit threatened to de-rail the Owls season before it had even begun but the Yorkshire club did well in the subsequent months to ensure they stayed on track.

Wednesday fans will no doubt be curious how the compensation is going to be used by the club, though it seems for that we need to wait a little longer.

It's interesting to here these additional details and find out that the fee was lower than the previously reported £4 million.
