Quote by the Daily Mail, Charlie Methven has revealed the motivation behind Sunderland being put up for sale by owner Stewart Donald as the club's search for new owners continues.

Donald's time at the club has lasted around two years and in that time the Wearsiders have wound up in League One but did make the play-off final last season at Wembley.

Indeed, it's been another dramatic period for the club and Donald is now looking for someone else to take the reins and try and get them back up the Football League pyramid.

With the global pandemic going on, though, there's perhaps a natural pause in that and it remains to be seen just when a sale is going to be completed for the Black Cats.

Methven, who has become a bit of a viral phenomenon thanks to the latest series of 'Sunderland 'Til I Die', says that Donald doesn't need to sell for financial reasons, though.

He revealed in an interview with the Daily Mail:

"Stewart does not need to sell for financial reasons.

"However, he did promise to leave once he was no longer wanted.

"So when the main fan organisation put out a statement saying they wanted him to go, he called me and said, 'Well that’s it then, I can’t cling on for dear life'."

The Verdict

It does perhaps make sense that Donald is looking to leave the club with many fans calling for a change in ownership in recent times.

The Black Cats have had a tough period and want to get back into the Premier League, but first they must make at least the play-offs in League One and get through that way this season.

It remains to be seen, then, what'll happen there and with the potential sale of the club.
