Aston Villa remain in the hunt for Chelsea defender Gary Cahill and could make a late move for the player before Thursday's deadline.

That's according to Birmingham Live, although Villa are waiting to see if a Premier League move materialises for the 33-year-old.

Cahill had been on Villa's radar heading into the window, however the Telegraph revealed the club considered a deal to be too expensive.

Yet, Yannick Bolasie's decision to return to Everton has freed up a lot of wages for Dean Smith, which could be used elsewhere.

And, whilst the Championship wouldn't normally appeal to someone of Cahill's pedigree, he did used to play for the West Midlands club.

Additionally, he has a close friendship with Villa assistant John Terry after the pair played alongside each other for years at Chelsea. So, a move may not be out the question.

However, his potential arrival sparked mixed feelings among Villa fans, with some hoping the club had moved away from signing experienced players on short-term deals.

Whereas, others recognised what a good addition the former England international could be.
