England manager Gareth Southgate reportedly wants to see Kalvin Phillips tested more at Premier League level before he calls him up to the national team squad, which is at odds with the stance of many Leeds United fans.
The 24-year-old has been a key man for Leeds over the past two seasons and appears to have taken his game to another level since the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa.

Phillips earned himself a place in the EFL Team of the Season last term and has been in impressive form again in the 2019/20 campaign–receiving the highest average rating of any player in his position (Whoscored).
The defensive midfielder is integral to Bielsa’s system, as he is comfortable dropping back into the backline and stepping up to join attacks.
Holding midfield is an area that England are currently a bit lacking, with few consistent options outside Jordan Henderson, and Andy Hinchcliffe has told The Athletic that he thinks Phillips deserves a chance.
Southgate was at Elland Road to watch Leeds’ 2-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday but Phil Hay has reported that people around Phillips believe the Three Lions boss wants to see him tested more at Premier League level.
That doesn’t seem to be a stance taken by many fans of the Yorkshire club, who took to Twitter to express their thoughts.

If Southgate has continuously watched him why isn’t he doing anything? He’s by far the best defensive mid in the UK right now. And probs the best defensive mid England can have right now. They’re idiots for not utiliting him just because he’s championship level.

He’s the holding mid that they’re currently missing. Also bring Vardy back into the fold

Doesn’t matter if his playing in the PL or not, the fact is KP as a DM is better aground than Rice, Dier, etc in that position just based on his passing alone he should be given a chance. Sorry but KP is the DM England dream of. Test him in the up coming friendlies, simples

Difference between Kalvin and the others who have received youth caps is Bielsa. Kalvin’s been coached by one of the very best. Bielsa saw something and Kalvin’s taken everything on board, he deserves that call up. The whole of Leeds would be proud, he’s one of our own! 💪
