Derby would be wise to sign Aston Villa ace

Derby’s seasons have been predictable of late.

A strong first half of the season leads to hope of automatic promotion. This is followed by a collapse in the second half as the Rams either lose in the play-offs or miss out entirely. If Frank Lampard is to turn this around, he would be wise to turn to former teammate John Terry.

The ex-England skipper provided Aston Villa with experience and leadership. It was essential to their play-off push and proved decisive as the side kept back-to-back clean sheets in the play-off semi-final. It was not just his presence that was important. He made a club-high 1.5 interceptions per game. His 6.1 clearances per game and 0.8 blocks per game were both second only to James Chester.

Two concerns over signing Terry would be his age and wage. At 38, it is hard to see Terry playing more than one season. There will be concerns about his fitness. However, he made 35 appearances last season. It is fair to say that his legs have not gone. He could make a notable contribution as a squad player at the very least. His wages are also likely to be higher than Derby would otherwise spend. Yet he would be signing on a free, so a saving would be made compared with a younger player.

Signing Terry would give Derby much needed steel to help stop the annual collapse. He may not stay for more than a year, but a year may be all that it takes for the Rams to return to the top flight.
