Derby County assistant Head-Coach Paul Simpson says the club are taking FA Cup Third Round opponents Southport as serious as Premier League leader’s Chelsea when they face them next week.
The Championship leaders take on the Premier League leaders next Tuesday in the Quarter Final of the Capital One Cup at the iPro Stadium and Simpson says the Non-League side will be treated as serious opponents.
Simpson said to the Derby Telegraph: “You want a home draw, that is the first thing you look for,” said Simpson. Southport will be a tough test. They are managed by a very experienced guy in Gary Brabin and we know it is going to be another challenge for us.”
“It is a game we can put on the back-burner because we have got some really tough fixtures leading up to it and then we have to make sure we do it properly. We will treat Southport exactly the same as we would any Championship game, exactly the same as we would do for Chelsea in the quarter-final of the Capital One Cup. We will have them watched, we will get reports on them and watch video clips.” added Simpson.
Simpson says Derby are expected to beat Southport as like every game this season.
”It is a different type of challenge for us. Down to the work the players have put in we are going into every game and people expect us to win, and it will be no different against Southport.
”Not being disrespectful to Southport but we will be expected to win. We are also fully aware that if we don’t treat the game properly and don’t go about our business right on the day, then Southport will give us a lot of problems.”
Derby County face Southport at home in the weekend starting January 3rd.
