Derby County will be looking to spend wisely this summer as they look to mount another challenge for promotion in 2018/19.

The school of thought around the club at the moment is that they cannot spend as much as they have in recent years and so a change in tact might be in order.

The Rams, then, might be looking for players that can come up from League One and League Two to do a job for them and it appears it's from the former division where a new arrival could originate.

Indeed, according to sports agent Will McCartan on Twitter, the Rams are keen on Duane Holmes from Scunthorpe United with the American midfielder a real energetic force in the middle of the park:

The player, clearly, is happy to stay with the Iron for next season but they'll not be able to turn down decent money from the Rams who appear prepared to offer exactly that.

Let's see, then, how this one pans out.

The Verdict

Could such a rumour prove that Derby are going to be looking at a different market for players this summer?

Holmes is a bright talent in League One and would provide some youth and energy to an ageing midfield but he will need to quickly adapt.

Fortunately, one of the great midfielders would be his new manager.
