Derby player expresses honest feelings about first international call-up

Krystian Bielik has stated how ‘proud’ he has felt to be in the squad for Poland’s upcoming European Qualifiers.

The centre-back joined Derby County from Arsenal in the summer, and has had an interesting start to life in the Championship. The Rams sit 19th in the league having won just once in their opening six games of the season.

However, there is room for smiles for the defender after being called-up to the Poland senior squad for the first time in his career.

This follows on from a successful campaign last year with both the Poland under-21 side and Charlton Athletic, who he helped earn promotion from League One.

Speaking to dcfc.co.uk, Bielik said: “I made it, finally! I’ve come from the Under-16 group and managed to progress through to the senior squad.

“I feel like I’ve earned it by coming through the youth teams. Last season went well for me at Charlton Athletic on loan and then with the Under-21 tournament in the summer too, which led to me joining Derby.

“As soon as I got the call-up, and once I arrived with the squad, I couldn’t wait to get started.

“The team is in a good place to qualify for the European Championships next summer so it’s an exciting time for the Poland national side. We want to keep going and it’s pleasing too that the manager is keen to include young players in the squad.”

“I will do my best in every session, try to get some minutes if I can to make my debut, which would be a proud moment, and then return to Derby for the big games we have coming up.”

The Verdict

He’s had an interesting start to his Derby career and hasn’t yet shown the potential that he did at Charlton.

It would be a big moment for the youngster to make his Poland debut considering he’s just 21-years-old. As well as that, it offers an opportunity to continue getting back to full fitness ahead of the Rams’ next game.

Bielik is a big money signing so there is already pressure to impress, and having been part of a team that conceded three to Brentford last Saturday he’ll be hoping that a trip away with Poland can help him come back ready for the Rams’ next fixtures.
