A host of Championship clubs are reportedly going after a Kilmarnock defender, but have the small obstacle of Premier League new boys Sheffield United standing in the way.

Derby County, Middlesbrough and Stoke City are all also interested in right back Stephen O'Donnell, the Scottish Daily Mail reports (June 26, page 81).

The 27-year-0ld is a current Scotland international and was an important figure in Kilmarnock's great season last year. He played 43 games in all competitions last season - missing just one league game - and picked up four assists. Internationally, he has picked up nine caps, debuting on May 30, 2018.

The Kilmarnock man - who had a two year spell in England with Luton between 2005-2007 - only has one year of his contract remaining, so Killie might be willing to cash in on him while they can.

Celtic are also understood to be interested, but the Daily Record says they are yet to make any sort of move.

The Verdict

O'Donnell had a fantastic season in the SPFL last year and is approaching the prime of his footballing career - he would be a great signing in the Championship.

The largest problem appears to be the interest from Sheffield United, as the Championship clubs simply won't have the clout to draw him away from them if they do go after him.

If they don't, then due to his contract expiring, he could be available at a really good price and could help improve any of Derby's, Middlesbrough's or Stoke's defence.
