Play-off chasing Derby County could be set to launch a surprise move for Birmingham City forward Gregg Stewart.

The 29-year-old, who is not part of Garry Monk's plans, has been out on loan this season, taking in spells with both Kilmarnock and Aberdeen with varying degrees of success.

However, despite being linked with a move to Rangers come the summer, it is Frank Lampard's Derby County who are being linked with a summer move for Stewart, with the Birmingham Mail claiming the Rams are keen on adding the striker to their ranks.

Any move for Stewart by Derby would come as something of a surprise given his current run of form for the Dons, where he has struggled for goals and looked short of the quality required to be a big success at Championship level.

The Rams though are looking to bring in some new faces in the summer, and it appears Lampard could well be willing to take a punt on the striker as he looks to pip former Premier League rival Steven Gerrard to the signature of the 29-year-old.

Stewart has had spells previously with the likes of Dundee and Cowdenbeath, but has struggled for form since making the move to St Andrews back in 2016.

The Verdict

This is a strange one to be honest, where you'd expect Derby to be looking for players of higher quality than this.

That's no disrespect to Stewart, but he's simply not done it since making the move to the English game.

However, some players can thrive when they have a point to prove, and Lampard might feel he can get the best out of the experienced striker.
