Sam Winnall has revealed that he would like to have a future at Derby County but admitted his focus at the moment is on ensuring he completes a full recovery from the bad knee injury he suffered last month.

The striker joined the Rams on deadline day in the summer from Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan and had scored six league goals for Gary Rowett's men before injury struck in early February.

The former Barnsley man was ruled out for the remainder of the season, and parts of the next campaign, after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament against Brentford.

Given that, the 27-year old told BBC Derby Sport that making a strong recovery is his only thought, not where his future lies, although he has stated in the past he would love to remain at Pride Park.

"Unfortunately, I can't even think about that right now. I have to concentrate every day on getting back fit."

"I think I made it quite obvious where I want my future to be. You know sometimes that is out of my control, all I can do is keep working hard and make sure when I do come back fit I am strong and in a good place."

The Verdict

The injury Winnall suffered was a massive blow for both him personally and Derby and they haven't won a game since he has been out, which highlights his importance.

Gary Rowett will recognise that and will appreciate what a good player Winnall is, but as he says all he can do is concentrate on his recovery.

There's plenty of time to sort things out in the future and we will see in time what happens.
