It's been a tough season for Derby County and Rams fans will just want to see their side secure mathematical safety in the Championship and have done with for the campaign.

Indeed, it's been one to forget with off-field matters concerning a takeover dragging on for way too long as well, but at least some good young players are still coming through and that is one silver lining.

Whether a takeover means they are better able to keep hold of those players remains to be seen, of course, and time will also tell what it might mean for signing players in the summer.

It seems unlikely in the current financial market that big money will be spent, of course, but on that note we're taking a look at 10 of the Rams' most expensive signings in history, with the help of transfermarkt.

Ikechi Anya arrived for £4.23m from Watford for the 16/17 season.

Anya was a flying full-back at the peak of his powers with him perhaps enjoying the best spell of his career at Watford, whilst he was also a Scottish international.

Things at Derby unfortunately never really worked out for him and he was released at the end of last season.

He is currently a free agent with this last year perhaps the toughest time to be exactly that given the financial climate clubs are in.

Georgi Kinkladze delighted fans in England during his time at Manchester City with his raw technical ability on the ball.

He was a player that got you out of your seat at City and this was before the big-money was spent in the sky blue half of Manchester.

He also played for the likes of Ajax and Boca Juniors during his career and it was from the former that he signed from for Derby.

The fee was £4.5m after an initial loan and he made over 80 league appearances for the Rams.

He retired in 2006 after a brief spell at Rubin Kazan.

Robert Earnshaw is eighth on our list having joined from Norwich City for £4.68m as he headed to Pride Park.

The Welsh forward scored plenty of goals at the levels he played at but his brief spell at the Rams was a forgettable.

He joined ahead of their return to the Premier League in 07/08 and we all know what happened next, as the Rams earned just eleven points that year.

Earnshaw had one league goal to his name from that campaign and left in the summer, joining arch-rivals Nottingham Forest.

The Welshman is now retired, with him studying for a UEFA Pro Licence and also regularly posing philosophical questions on Twitter.

Jacob Butterfield is joint sixth in this list having joined Derby from Huddersfield Town for £4.95m as he made the switch from Yorkshire to Derbyshire.

He was at the club between 2015 and 2019 as he made 80 league appearances during that time, whilst some of it was spent out on loan at the likes of Sheffield Wednesday.

Butterfield now plies his trade in Australia, meanwhile, with him joining Melbourn Victory in 2020 after spending last season briefly at Luton Town having left the Rams in 2019.

Also signing for Derby for £4.95m was winger Tom Lawrence who arrived from East Midlands rivals Leicester City in 17/18.

Lawrence is a flying winger and a Welsh international having played over 20 times for his country since his debut in 2015.

His time at Derby has had highs and well-documented lows since his arrival from the Foxes but he remains a Rams player under Wayne Rooney.

He's made over 100 league appearances for the Rams since joining and has arguably had more success for the same fee than former team-mate Butterfield.

Martyn Waghorn is fifth in this list having joined the Rams for £5.04m from Ipswich Town.

Waghorn has scored a fair amount of goals at this level but he has been hampered by injuries at times during his spell at Pride Park - earlier this season we saw a clear example of that.

He's at the centre of a few headlines at the moment, too, with Wayne Rooney leaving him out of the matchday squad against Stoke over performances in training, so it's an interesting story to monitor at the moment.

Waghorn has played for the likes of Rangers and Sunderland in his career so far, and time will tell if he is a Derby player next season.

Tom Ince arrived for £6.03m after joining from Hull City.

Ince has played for a number of EFL clubs since leaving Liverpool where he came through as a kid, to varying degrees of success.

He played 100 times for Blackpool in the league in his early years whilst significant spells at Derby and Stoke have followed that.

The winger joined Luton Town in the January window on loan, meanwhile, and it is anyone's guess as to whether his long-term future remains at the Potters or elsewhere.

Ince has talent, but it's just a case of finding the right club for him to get the best out of him.

Bradley Johnson signed for the Rams for £7.29m from Norwich City.

The midfielder enjoyed a long spell at Derby County, having done similar with both the Canaries and Leeds United.

He made 119 league appearances for Leeds, 142 league appearances for Norwich and 141 appearances for the Rams, so it's clear clubs got their money's worth when they did sign him.

In 2019, Johnson moved to Blackburn Rovers to extend his stay in the Championship with him making over 50 league appearances for them so far.

Krystian Bielik joined Derby for £7.38m from Arsenal in a deal that many supporters were excited to see go through.

Having spent an impressive loan at Charlton Athletic away from Arsenal, Derby County liked what they saw and opted to sign him on a permanent deal.

He quickly became a key cog at the base of the Derby midfield and his injury this season has underlined how important he is with the quality he brings in that role.

Just 23, he has several years left at the top of the game and he'll be hoping that he can climb up into the Premier League with Derby in the near future.

He's also made a handful of appearances for Poland.

Matej Vydra tops our list having signed for £8.46m from Watford.

Vydra was a real menace in the Championship for Derby County and is perhaps a good example of a player that can tear up the second tier but not always get it right in the Premier League.

Rams fans were naturally disappointed when he moved to Burnley to play in the top flight but he has struggled for game-time at times under Sean Dyche, with the likes of Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes ahead of him in the pecking order.

However, in recent weeks he's had a bit more of a look-in and has a goal and assist in his last three games so maybe he is going to start kicking on in claret now.

The forward has made over 30 appearances for the Czech national team so far.
