Derby County will not be signing Luciano Acosta in the January window despite reports linking the attacking midfielder with the Rams.

The 25-year-old playmaker, who was close to joining PSG in the past, was believed to have been recommended to the Championship club by Wayne Rooney.

England's all-time top scorer is joining Derby in January and has spent the past few years playing alongside Acosta for DC United in MLS. The pair formed a strong understanding, particularly in 2018, as they helped the side reach the post season play-offs against all odds.

So, the chance to resurrect that partnership at Pride Park clearly appealed to Rooney, but Derbyshire Live have confirmed this afternoon that Acosta is not a player that the club are interested in.

Whilst the update doesn't go into detail as to why Derby won't be pursuing a deal, they are pretty well-stocked in that department, with Tom Lawrence starring as a number ten recently.

Meanwhile, Rooney will give boss Phillip Cocu another option in that role when he is eligible to play from January 2.

The verdict

This is a blow for Derby as Acosta is a classy player and he really would've added a lot to the team with his ability if they could have pulled it off.

However, they have plenty of options in the final third so you can understand why they are looking elsewhere, whilst it might not have made sense financially too.

It should still be an interesting January for the Rams and it could be a very busy month as Cocu looks to strengthen.
