Derby County have put a £5m price tag on Max Bird as Chelsea continue to monitor the midfielder.

The 19-year-old has been one of several talented youngsters to make the step up from the academy this season, with Bird featuring in 13 league games under Phillip Cocu.

And, he has shone at times. So much so, Football Insider have claimed that former Rams chief Frank Lampard wants to bring the teenager to Stamford Bridge in the next transfer window.

They state that the Chelsea legend and assistant Jody Morris were aware of Bird's ability last season and have been impressed with how he has handled the step up to the first-team.

The same media outlet have now said that the Championship side will demand £5m from the Blues if they want to do a deal.

Prior to the enforced break, Bird had been a regular for Derby, starting their previous nine league fixtures in a defensive midfield position.

His performances have helped Cocu's men move slowly up the table and they are within five points of the play-off places with nine games of the season remaining.

The verdict

We don't know how the market is going to play out after the Coronavirus crisis ends but you'd have to say that £5m doesn't seem like a great deal from Derby's perspective.

For Chelsea, it's nothing at all and they would probably see this as a worthwhile investment considering the potential that Bird has.

So, Derby fans will hope this isn't true and from Bird's view, he should be looking to stay at the Rams as he knows he will get minutes to continue his development.
