Derby County are interested in signing Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann on loan, according to Football Insider.
Derby manager Phillip Cocu is looking to put his own stamp on his squad after taking charge at Pride Park earlier this month, wants to bring in a new first-choice goalkeeper for the new season.
Bachmann is yet to make a first-team appearance for Watford and spent last season on loan at Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock, where he conceded 22 goals and kept 14 clean sheets in 28 appearances.
The 25-year-old has been recommended to Cocu by Derby goalkeeping coach Shay Given, who trained with him at Stoke City.
Scott Carson was the first-choice goalkeeper for Derby for the first half of last season and kept five clean sheets in the Championship, but lost his place in the side to Kelle Roos in the second half of the campaign after picking up an injury.
Roos would go on to make 24 appearances for Derby in all competitions and kept an impressive eight clean sheets, as the Rams reached the Championship play-off final at Wembley.
The Dutchman signed a new three-year contract with Derby earlier this summer, but it seems as though Cocu has his own ideas about who should be his first-choice shot-stopper next season.
The Daily Mirror’s live transfer blog (17/07, 13:33) claimed that Cocu is keen to offload Carson this summer and it now seems as though he has his sights set on a replacement for the 33-year-old.
This could be a good signing for Derby and an ideal replacement for Carson, but I’ve got to say I’m surprised that Cocu is looking for a new first-choice goalkeeper.
I thought Roos was fantastic for Derby last season and I expected him to be their number one ‘keeper for this coming season, but it seems as though Cocu may have other ideas.
Bachmann is obviously a talented goalkeeper if Given sees something in him and he was very impressive while on loan at Kilmarnock last season.
He probably isn’t going to get much of a chance at Watford next season ahead of Heurelho Gomes or Ben Foster, so another loan move would be a good option for him.
Carson got one year left on his contract at Pride Park and is thought to be one of the highest earners at the club. It makes complete sense for Derby to look to move him on this summer and Bachmann would be an ideal replacement.
