Erik Alonso has vowed to 'spend the right money' on new players if his Derby County takeover goes through.

The Athletic revealed earlier this week that the Spaniard had agreed a deal to purchase the club with the takeover now going through the EFL's Owners and Directors test.

Reports have since claimed that a decision from the EFL could be expected at the end of next week.

As you'd expect supporters are now very excited at the prospect of a takeover with the idea that Alonso will be in charge for the start of the summer transfer window being hugely appealing.

Derby will need significant investment if they're to challenge for promotion next term  - something that the Spaniard has promised to bring if his takeover goes through.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Alonso said: "I will not say how much money I have, and that's normal.

"We will spend the right money. If we think a player is right for us, and we will spend it. If there is one for free, we will do that too.

"We will not throw the money. We will do things properly. If we need to spend £20m we will, if we need to spend £150m then we will. It depends. We have that sort of money. If the team needs that, we will do it.

"First we will talk to Wayne about which players will continue next season, and which others we will bring."

The verdict

This is fantastic news for Derby County supporters.

The Rams have endured a rough season this term and it seems that they're going to need a big summer in the transfer market if they're to get anywhere near the top six next term.

Erik Alonso's comments are certainly encouraging and exactly what fans want to hear.
