Derby defender Curtis Davies has given his thoughts to Brighton's decision to sack Chris Hughton today and admitted he was sad for his former boss.

The Seagulls endured a very tough second half to the campaign, however they managed to preserve their Premier League status going into the final game on Sunday.

But, that wasn't enough for Hughton to keep his job, with the club confirming his sacking early this morning.

And, Davies, who played for the 60-year-old for one season when at Birmingham back in 2011, showed sympathy to the Irishman with a message on twitter.

"On a totally personal level I’m sad to see Chris Hughton part ways with Brighton. Great guy and hope to see him back in a job soon!"

Swansea City manager Graham Potter has emerged as an early frontrunner to succeed Hughton at the top-flight outfit, whilst Davies' current boss Frank Lampard is also believed to be a candidate.

However, the Rams will hope to secure promotion the Premier League themselves, although they face a big ask after losing the first leg of their semi-final 1-0 at home to Leeds.

The Verdict

This is a nice tough from Davies who clearly appreciated working with Hughton and recognised that he has done a great job with Brighton.

In some ways it was a surprise to see the south coast side make the decision but they were fighting relegation despite some big summer signings that didn't work out.

Derby and Davies will no doubt hope that they don't turn to Lampard as they search for Hughton's replacement.
