Derby County, finished the season in ninth place in the Championship, 13 points outside of the play-off places.

Having started the season with Nigel Pearson as manager, the Rams struggled to find any kind of form, winning just one game under his tenure this campaign, and the board quickly acted to remove him from his role.

Following the club parting ways with Pearson, they appointed former manager Steve McClaren back to the post for a second time, but McClaren lasted just five months in the job.

Following an alarming run of results which saw Derby win just one game in nine, and finding themselves in tenth place in the league table, the club's owner Mel Morris decided to act, and parted company with McClaren for the second time in less than two years, leaving the Rams looking for their fifth manager in just 22 months.

The club turned to former player Gary Rowett as their new manager and gave him the task of building a squad capable of promotion out of the Championship, and into the Premier League.

Having had nine games since his appointment to assess the squad currently in place, Rowett has started to recruit ahead of the new season by landing centre half Curtis Davies on a two-year contract.

It was at the other end of the pitch though where Derby seemed to have problems this season, scoring just 54 goals in the league campaign, the lowest of the top 12 clubs.

With this in mind the club should turn to Exeter City midfielder David Wheeler.

The Exeter midfielder is coming off the back of a terrific season on a personal level, having scored 19 goals, including one in the play-off final defeat to Blackpool at Wembley Stadium and providing six assists for his teammates.

This contribution could prove to be beneficial to Derby, and help them take that next step of  promotion to the Premier League.
