Derby County head into the final game of the season knowing they need a point at home to Barnsley to realistically guarantee a top six finish.

Whilst most will expect that to happen, Rams fans will be taking nothing for granted after previous failed attempts over the years.

That looked like it would happen again after an alarming run of form this year and even though they've fought back to give themselves a great chance of making the play-offs boss Gary Rowett will be aware of the issues.

He has covered those in the past, recently stating that some of his players struggled to cope with the demands of the division.

And, one man who could help beef up the squad and bring a different quality to the midfield is Birmingham's Maikel Kieftenbeld.

He is a player Rowett knows well from his time at St. Andrew's and a move to Pride Park memorably collapsed late on back in the summer.

Therefore, he clearly rates the Dutch midfielder and it's easy to see why, with our graphic demonstrating what an effective player he is.

Kieftenbeld keeps it simple with his passing, rarely losing the ball and importantly regularly makes interceptions and tackles to break up play.

He also has great defensive instincts that some current Rams midfielders sometimes lack and he is very disciplined in his play.

It may not be the big-name signing that attracts attention but bringing in unsung heroes like Kieftenbeld could be key to Derby lasting the pace next season if they fail to go up in the next few weeks.
