Derby County boss Paul Clement is hoping to bolster his depleted midfield by signing Brighton and Hove Albion star Dale Stephens, according to today’s print edition of the Sun.
The Rams are crying out for new recruits in the middle of the park having already lost Will Hughes, Jeff Hendrick, Craig Bryson and Jamie Hanson to injures this season.
It was thought that the Rams were in the running for Huddersfield Town midfielder Jacob Butterfield but the club are not willing to part with the £5 million that the Terriers want for their asset.
Clement has therefore turned his attentions to Stephens and hopes a bid of around £2.5 million could tempt the Seagulls into a sale.
The 25-year-old has been at the AMEX Stadium since moving from Charlton in 2014 and although he missed a large percentage of last season through injury, he still has talent in abundance.
One factor in the Rams’ favour could be that Stephens is eager to move closer to his family in the north which would make Derby an attractive proposition for Stephens.
