Derby County have been linked with Eibar defender Raul Albentosa, according to the Derby Telegraph.
The 6ft 4in centre back is currently at Eibar, who are in eighth place in La Liga. He’s made 47 appearances for the Spanish side, scoring four goals joining Elche in 2013.
A fee of £470 000 has reportedly been agreed between the two side, as Albentosa’s deal runs out in the summer. He was linked with Premier League sides Leicester City, Burnley, Queens Park Rangers and West Bromwich Albion in late December.
Derby have recently been subject to interest in their manager, Steve McClaren, who Newcastle United were looking at to replace Alan Pardew. McClaren has come out and said he remains loyal to Derby, and will not be leaving.
They’ve also penned goalkeeper Lee Grant to a new deal that will keep him at the club until 2017.
Since joining from Burnley in 2013, the keeper has made 71 appearances for the Rams. The ex-England under-21 international originally came through Derby’s youth ranks, but left for Sheffield Wednesday in 2007.
At the age of 26, Albentosa has a fair few years in his career ahead of him still in professional football, so the Rams will be signing a player who could remain at the club for a while.
The issue lies in how Albentosa can adapt to life in the Sky Bet Championship, as it is a truly unique division which demands high-temp, intense football week in week out.
Steve McClaren’s side currently sit in third position in the Sky Bet Championship, and lie only three points from league leaders AFC Bournemouth.
