According to a report in the London Evening Standard, Derby County sent a scout to watch Ethan Ampadu in action last night for Chelsea’s under-23 side, who were in Checkatrade Trophy action against Lincoln City.

Lincoln progressed past Chelsea at the semi-final stage to secure a Wembley day out, but Ampadu still impressed at the heart of defence for the Blues, who have hopes he will be a star in their first-team in the coming years.

The former Exeter City youngster has already made an impact in the first-team at Stamford Bridge, featuring on three occasions in the Carabao Cup, twice in the FA Cup and once in the Premier League under Antonio Conte.

Derby’s scout was reportedly extremely impressed by the 17-year-old’s performance, writing a glowing report on the defender, who can also play further forward in midfield.

Ampadu, already a full Welsh international, is highly thought of at Chelsea, and it is believed that any approach made by the Rams to sign him on-loan in the summer would be rebuffed by the Premier League giants.

Gary Rowett’s Derby side currently sit second in the Championship table, a point clear of the chasing pack and in a commanding position to push on for a Premier League return.

The Verdict

Ampadu is an extremely talented player, who at such a young age has already made a great impact in the first-team at Chelsea.

Although he is still only on the brink of regular football at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea obviously see Ampadu featuring regularly in the coming year.

If Derby can surprisingly land any kind of deal for Ampadu, he would improve them, whether they are in the Premier League or remain in the Sky Bet Championship.
