It's fair to say that Derby County have had a turbulent time of late.

After their relegation down to League One last season, a failed takeover attempt led manager Wayne Rooney to walk away from the club.

Assistant manager Liam Rosenior initially took over as interim manager whilst things were still unsure regarding the future of the club.

Things have looked up for the club since though following the successful takeover of the club by Clowes Development and signings have now been made in preparation for the new season.

The new owners have been keen to credit the interim manager for his work so far as the club released a statement reading: "Much of the credit for that [building a competitive squad] goes to Liam Rosenior and the club's recruitment staff who have done a superb job in helping to bring top class talent to Pride Park Stadium.

"We have also been impressed with the work Liam and his coaches have undertaken at Moor Farm Training Ground in creating a style of football that he feels will be successful this season."

Looking ahead to the new campaign, the club have also provided an update on the managerial situation at Pride Park as they said: "It goes without saying that Liam worked tirelessly last season under the most difficult of circumstances and he deserves the opportunity to carry on that work.

"As with every aspect of the club, David Clowes and his team are taking their time to understand the strengths and the weaknesses of the football side, and to consider all structural options. Liam will retain the title of interim manager and will be given every support and encouragement to make the job his.

"This is a new era for Derby County and a new era for Liam as he takes his first steps in management. He has shown a real aptitude and appetite for the job in hand and has the respect of the board as he prepares for an exciting campaign.

"In the meantime, the club will be working round the clock to provide Liam with the players and resources he requires to be successful in the role."

The Verdict:

This seems like a fair decision from the club given the work that Rosenior's done since stepping in as manager. He has made some really strong additions but also understands the nature of the club as well as bridging the gap between last season and the new era.

Of course his title currently remains interim manager so the results of the side in upcoming games could be crucial to him. However, should he get off to a good start, there's no reason why he couldn't be given this job on a permanent basis next season.

With the Rams wanting to go straight back up to the Championship, it would be understandable to see them appoint a proven manager this summer. However, keeping Roseinor in charge for now feels like a sensible approach as well as rewarding him with an opportunity he deserved.
