Derby County have started looking for a new manager, and according to the Daily Mail, Garry Monk and Darren Moore have emerged as early candidates.

Former Rams player John Eustace is also believed to be in contention, as well as Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes, as Derby look to start their search early as Frank Lampard has now entered talks with Chelsea.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has also reportedly been targeted, but he is set to reject any approach made - stating that he wants to remain in Glasgow.

Monk is recently out of a job having been sacked by Birmingham just last week, despite performing above expectations at the club.

Moore is another manager who many thought was unfairly sacked. At the time of his dismissal West Brom were fourth in the league and just four points off an automatic place, and having played for The Rams, Moore could be a favourite for the role.

Whomever takes on the job, Derby will be hoping it is a long-term appointment, having had five managers in the past four years.

The Verdict

It is good to see Derby taking a proactive approach, and they need to do so if the new boss is going to have time to prepare his squad ahead of the new season.

Lampard to Chelsea looks nailed on and it is now only a matter of formality. Derby should be drawing up a shortlist ready to interview potential candidates, and the names listed so far should create optimism.

Moore and Monk are very good managers at Championship level, and both were undeservedly sacked. Derby should present them with an opportunity to work with good quality players, whilst bringing in new faces too. If they get off to a good start Derby should do very well next season under either of them.
