Derby County are plotting a move for Brighton goalkeeper, Christian Walton when the transfer window re-opens in the summer according to print edition of The Sun (18th February, page 61).

The Rams are likely to be in the market for a new goalkeeper in the summer with Kelle Roos' contract set to expire at the end of the season.

They'll need backup to Scott Carson and have seemingly identified Walton as their number one target heading into the summer transfer window.

Walton is currently on loan with Wigan, and has been impressive in his two seasons with the Championship strugglers.

At the age of 23, he certainly has many more years ahead of him in the professional game, and he'll be keen to resolve his long-term future in the near future.

It seems unlikely that Walton will be able to force his way into the Brighton starting XI anytime soon, and he'll be hoping that the Seagulls take Derby's reported interest seriously in the summer.

It is thought that Brighton are only willing to send Walton out on loan, so Derby will have to test their resilience with a formal offer for a permanent deal to take place.

The Verdict:

Surely there are better options out there?

I'm not doubting that Walton is a good goalkeeper at Championship standard, but there are better and more experienced alternatives that will be available in the summer.

I'd steer clear of a move for him if I was Derby.
