Reports have surfaced in the last day or so that a number of Championship clubs, including Derby County have been linked with centre back Frederico Venancio.

The 24-year-old currently plays for Portuguese side Vitoria Setubal, and has also been rumoured to be interesting Leeds United and Reading.

Derby have been poor in defence this season, so an addition or two at the back would definitely be welcome at Pride Park.

Some Rams fans would like to see captain Richard Keogh leave the club, while others want Alex Pearce out the door, with some wanting both gone.

Jason Shackell is the only other first team centre-back at Gary Rowett's disposal, but he hasn't played a single minute of football since the former Birmingham boss was appointed, suggesting that Rowett isn't his biggest fan.

Derby need defensive reinforcements this summer, poor defending has cost them so many points in the 2016/17 season, despite being solid at the back earlier on in the campaign.

Between September and January, the Rams didn't concede a goal at home, but as the season continued their defensive form collapsed.

The Rams have leaked goals in the final few months of the season, and not just against the top sides.

Back in February, what was then Steve McClaren's side they shipped three goals at home to Bristol City, before conceding four in a home defeat to Cardiff three days later.

Rowett's Derby side hasn't been that much better at the back, his side lost 4-0 to Brentford and have kept just one clean sheet since he arrived.

Frederico Venancio could be a good signing for Derby, as a centre-back is very much needed.

The 24-year-old would hopefully bring more solidity to the Rams back-line.

Venancio has made over 100 appearances for Vitoria Setubal since his debut in 2012, so not only does he add defensive ability but experience too.
