Clarke burst onto the scene at Leeds back in the 2018/19 season, making 22 appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s promotion-winning side. Despite starting only four games, he scored twice and registered two assists, catching the eye of Premier League clubs.
Leeds accepted Tottenham’s £10m proposal ahead of 2019/20 and took Clarke back on loan. However, that loan didn’t prove to be fruitful, which was the beginning of a downward spiral in terms of form.
Clarke quickly relocated with Queens Park Rangers midway through 19/20 and then spent some time on loan with Stoke City earlier in 2021.
His only appearances for Tottenham this season have come in the Europa League Conference and with the club’s youth sides, with no first-team prospects on the horizon.
Clarke showed during his early appearances at Leeds that he’s got massive talent and the ability to tear the Championship to pieces.
However, Derby, Millwall, Barnsley and Luton should all be mindful that it’s almost three years ago since we saw that level from Clarke.
He struggled after leaving Leeds and returning on loan, with neither QPR or Stoke getting the best out of him.
Whoever lands his signature in January has a task on their hands getting Clarke back to his devastating best.
