Steve Cooper has emerged as a candidate for the Derby County manager's role, according to Alan Nixon.

The Rams are stepping up their pursuit of a new boss following the decision to sack Phillip Cocu from his position on Sunday evening.

That call was made after a poor start to the season which saw Cocu lead the club to just one victory in 11 fixtures so far this term, leaving them struggling at the bottom of the league.

As a result the search for a new boss is well underway.

Quiz: Did these 17 Derby County players ever actually score a league goal for the club?

Reports from the Derby Telegraph have claimed that the Rams are yet to open formal talks with any candidates, but that doesn't mean that a number of names aren't on the list.

Wayne Rooney has been heavily linked with the role, however Nixon has claimed that Steve Cooper is also of interest.

The Swansea City boss has been very impressive since taking over the South Wales side, and could be seen as a progressive appointment for the Owls.

Cooper led the Swans to a top six finish last term - something that will certainly be of interest to the Rams as they look to push themselves up the table.

The Verdict

Steve Cook could be a very exciting appointment for Derby County.

A manager who knows the Championship well, Cooper would certainly bring an attractive style of play to the club - something that supporters will absolutely love.

Whether he will want to leave Swansea City remains to be seen, but he's certainly a credible contender.
