Derby County are unlikely to go down the route of appointing Sam Allardyce as their new manager, according to the Derbyshire Telegraph.

The Rams are in the middle of an extensive search for a new boss following the decision to sack Phillip Cocu last week.

Derby have won just one game out of 12 so far and are sitting bottom of the Championship after an incredibly difficult start to the season.

That's why the next appointment is so crucial.

Many names have been linked with the job including the likes of Wayne Rooney, Liam Rosenior, John Terry, Steve Cooper and John Gregory, however one name to emerge more recently is that of Allardyce.

Quiz: Did these 17 Derby County players ever actually score a league goal for the club?

The ex-Newcastle United and Sunderland boss is out of work but could be tempted by the role with the Rams.

However it seems that the chances of such a move are unlikely, with the report claiming that the experienced boss is not thought to be one of the frontrunners for the role.

The Verdict

This is a strange one.

While I understand that Sam Allardyce may not be considered as the most exciting option available for the Derby County role, there's no doubting his credentials.

The experienced boss would certainly make the Rams hard to beat and would ensure that they picked up points and moved up the table.

Derby must walk before they can run and so a move for a manager like Allardyce may not be the worst idea in the world.

It seems unlikely, but isn't an idea that should be immediately ruled out.
