It's been a mixed start to the season for Derby County, who have yet to find a real consistency which is why they are 15th in the league.

The same could be said for Johnny Russell.

The Scottish wide man began the season in Gary Rowett's team but then found himself unable to make the matchday squad for the previous two outings prior to Saturday's game at Cardiff City.

He was recalled to the XI for the game in the Welsh capital and his boss was delighted with how he played, when speaking to the official site.

I had a good chat with Johnny on Friday and I felt it was good timing to come back in and show us what he could do. I felt he would be hugely motivated after not being in the squad for the last couple of games – and I think he was.”

Russell played 75 minutes as Derby got a 0-0 draw against the league leaders and the former Dundee United man was a threat throughout.

His manager also revealed why he was substituted.

He took a knock to his back and hip area towards the end of the first half and it did stiffen up, which was the only reason I took him off.”

The Verdict

Johnny Russell struggled at times last season compared to how he started his Derby career, scoring only twice and he's yet to find the net in his eight games so far this term.

Whilst dropping him may have surprised a few, Derby fans will hope it makes him realise he needs to add regular end product to his game.

However, you have to praise the Scotsman for his response, he came in and did a job that Rowett asked of him and his attitude will have pleased his manager.
