The 29-year-old was a big-money signing for the east Midlands outfit back in 2015, however he struggled to make the impact he would’ve hoped for at Pride Park.
Several loan moves have happened since, with Butterfield spending the latter part of the previous campaign on loan at Bradford City.
However, he has a permanent new home now, with the Hatters announcing his arrival on their official site this evening, with the former Sheffield Wednesday man revealing how he is relishing the chance to get his career back on track.
“I’m really excited to get going. I think it’s a big season for the club, a really exciting time for the club and I’m delighted to be here.
“They are great lads. I settled in straight away. They are a welcoming bunch and I’ve been really impressed so far. The manager is good and the way he wants to play this year is really exciting. I feel good.”
This seems as though it is a good move for all parties.
Firstly, Butterfield wasn’t going to play regularly for Derby, if at all, so he needed to sort a move to get game time after a frustrating few years.
Similarly, Derby will be glad to move the player on because things just didn’t work out as they had planned when he arrived.
Finally, bringing in someone with Championship experience is a smart move from the Hatters and Butterfield’s technique and composure in possession means he should be able to adapt pretty well to his new team.
