Derby County forward Jack Marriott is closing in on a return to Peterborough United, according to a report from Yorkshire Live.

Marriott spent one season with Peterborough earlier in his career, before earning a move to Derby County in 2018. He scored some crucial goals for the Rams in the 2018/19 season, including one against Leeds United in their play-off semi-final.

The 26-year-old was sent out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday in the 2020/21 season, as he failed to score a single goal in 13 appearances for the Owls, as they were relegated into League One.

The Rams endured a forgetful season themselves this term though, as they finished 21st in the Championship table, narrowly avoided relegation into League One, after drawing 3-3 with Sheffield Wednesday on the final day of that campaign.

There's been plenty of off-field uncertainty heading into the 2021/22 season for Derby County, but they're seemingly planning for life without Marriott either way.

Peterborough United's supporters will be hoping that Marriott can hit the ground running next season, as they prepare for life back in the Championship.

Posh finished second in the third tier standings recently, as they clinched their return to the Championship under the management of Darren Ferguson.

Hull City were reportedly also keen on a deal to sign Marriott, but the striker is seemingly 'closing in' on a return to his former side this summer.

The Verdict:

This could turn out to be an excellent signing by Peterborough United this summer.

Marriott is a player that they'll know all about after his impressive showings for Posh earlier in his career. He's got a point to prove in the Championship, having not been given a fair run in the Derby first-team.

An unsuccessful loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday followed that spell with the Rams, and he'll be eager to make a positive start to the season with Peterborough.

If he can do that, then Derby could live to regret moving him on ahead of the new league campaign.
