Derby County have confirmed that they have given manager Gary Rowett permission to speak to Stoke City about the vacant managerial position at the bet365 stadium.

Rumours had persisted over the past few days that Rowett was a prime target for the Potters after they had considered him for the job mid-season before he ended up signing an improved contract extension to stay at Pride Park.

However, they are still keen on bringing Rowett to the club and the Rams revealed on their website that he has asked to speak to Stoke.

The statement also added that Derby would be speaking to recently relegated Stoke about the situation and that supporters can expect to receive updates in due course.

Rowett has just completed his first full season as Derby manager, which ended in disappointment with his side failing to overcome Fulham in the play-off semi-final.

Failure to win promotion means Derby are set for an 11th consecutive season in the second tier and Rowett revealed he would have to cut costs this summer which would see some key players leaving.

The Verdict

This is a massive blow for Derby as Rowett has done a good job since taking over but you can see why he wants to go.

Stoke will have more money and therefore more chance of winning promotion next season so whilst it will be hard for fans to take, particularly as he signed an extension in January, it is understandable.

Clearly there are further issues to sort out but this is a big step to Rowett becoming the new Stoke boss.
