Derby County interested in securing a deal for 26-year-old attacker

Derby County are interested in signing Oxford United’s Marvin Johnson during the summer, as Steve McClaren looks to bolster his attacking options, reports the Daily Mail.

McClaren has struggled to find a suitable partner for Tom Ince and Darren Bent in attack, using a number of players on the left-side.

Matej Vydra, Johnny Russell, Abdoul Camara, and Nick Blackman have all featured on the left, but have failed to nail down a regular place in McClaren’s side.

McClaren has now turned his attention to Oxford’s 26-year old forward Johnson, who has impressed in Sky Bet League One this season, scoring five-goals across all competitions.

Johnson joined Oxford from Motherwell last August, and has helped The U’s to 11th in the League One table this season, and seemingly on course for a mid-table finish.

The Rams have endured a disappointing season in the Championship, following McClaren’s re-appointment in October and an initial upturn in results, it seemed Derby would push on towards the Play-Offs, but failure to win a single game across February has seriously hindered top-six hopes.

The poor run of form saw McClaren abandon his preferred 4-3-3 formation to a 4-2-3-1, where Vydra looks like taking advantage of his opportunity on the left-side of attack- after scoring in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Preston North End.

Derby face title-chasing Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday evening as they look to re-ignite their Play-Off hopes and begin to close the ten-point gap to Sheffield Wednesday.

Derby fans… Do you think Johnson would be a good addition? Is that the area McClaren needs to strengthen? Let us know in the comments below!
