Derby County goalkeeper Lee Grant says their are no excuses for his mistake against Wolverhampton Wanderers last Friday night.

Fans and players were equally horrified to see Grant score and own goal, as a high ball, scuffed by a Rams defender, was unsuccessful palmed away by the goalkeeper, who ended up palming it into his own net.

It meant that Wolves doubled their lead to 2-0 after Bakary Sako's opener and it now extends Derby's winless run to a shocking six games, edging them further and further away from automatic promotion.

Grant said he was 'disappointed' not just for himself but for his teammates who worked very hard in the game.

He told Burton Mail: "Obviously it's hugely disappointing.

"My main disappointment is not for myself but for the other guys who worked really, really hard out there and probably deserved something from the game.

"If it wasn't for a huge error at an important time for myself, I think we may have got something.

"It was a basic error, really. It's a ball you deal with 99 times out of 100.

"Yes, it's a difficult ball that's hanging in the air but, for me, it's a ball that I would consistently deal with and enjoy dealing with.

"It ended up spinning off the back of my gloves and going in the net.

"I'm hugely disappointed to have made a key error at a big time.

"As a senior player, you pride yourself on not making those errors but, unfortunately, I've made one and I hold my hands up."

The defeat was perhaps made worse by the fact the Derby struck the woodwork twice and Tom Ince, who's recently turned down the opportunity to play for England under-21s, had a disallowed goal after a foul by a Derby player.

It's a worrying time for Rams fans, as they're now five points off an automatic promotion spot, and are level on points with with sixth place Ipswich Town, and could drop out of the play off places if they slip up after the international break.

Currently fifth, Steve McClaren's side have accumulated 67 points this term in the Sky Bet Championship.
